Can you make a pipe out of black walnut?
Yes, you can make a pipe out of black walnut. It's not that easy, but it is possible.
The first step is to make sure your pipe will be finished with a stain or other type of finish that will hide the grain of the wood. A lighter color stain will show off the grain better than a dark color.
Next wooden pipe manufacturers need to cut the block into slabs and then further down into blocks. The reason I recommend this is that there are some species like cherry that have very little figure and it's not worth working with them as they don't look good when finished. Black walnut has lots of figure so you want to use as much as possible.
Once you have your blanks cut, you can glue them up using whatever woodworking glue for gluing two pieces together that works best for you. Then cut them down into pipes using a bandsaw or scroll saw (I prefer bandsaw). Once you have all your pipes cut out, sand them smooth on all sides including inside the bowl and outside of stem/shank joint area where the two pieces meet up together (this area needs to be smooth so when it comes time to assemble pipe together, there are no gaps or rough spots).
