Smoking pipes are made in many different ways and come in a variety of shapes and styles.

The most common material used to make smoking pipes is briar wood, which comes from the rootstock of a Mediterranean bush known as Erica arborea. The roots of this plant grow very slowly and only reach depths of one or two meters (three to six feet). The wood has been valued for its beauty since ancient times and has been used to make smoking pipes since at least the 17th century.

Other materials used to make smoking pipes include meerschaum, corncob, clay, porcelain and acrylic. Some modern artists even create their own unique designs using found objects like car parts, engine blocks or motorcycle parts.

Smoking Pipes Are Hand-Crafted

The manufacturing process begins with the selection of raw materials such as briar wood or meerschaum (a porous stone). The material is then cut into blocks that resemble logs. It's important that each block be the same size so they can be drilled in a uniform manner. The blocks are then sanded down by hand until they're smooth enough for use as pipe bowls.

There are two main types of smoking pipes: Billiard/Sherlock and Calabash.

Billiard/Sherlock pipes

These are named after the famous pipe maker who made them. He copied an earlier style of pipe that was popular with the French aristocracy in the 17th century.

Calabash Pipes

These have a large bowl that looks like a gourd and is carved from a single piece of wood using only hand tools. The stem is usually made from ivory or bone with a metal mouthpiece.
