depends on the type of tobacco and how it's stored.

I've heard that a good rule of thumb is that if you are storing your tobacco in a sealed container (zip-lock bags, a sealed glass jar) and keeping it out of direct sunlight, it will last about two years. If you're not sure if your tobacco has been exposed to sunlight, or if you're just unsure how long your tobacco has been sitting around, then I would recommend starting with just one year as a rough estimate.

Of course, there are ways to extend this life span even more. For example, if you don't fill your pipe all the way up each time then less air will be able to get in and out of the bowl and so less oxygen will be able to react with the tobaccos inside. This will make it last longer. Another thing to note is that most pipe tobaccos have already been aged when they are sold to consumers; however there are still some benefits to aging your own blends as well.

There are two ways to answer this question.

The first is to simply look at the ingredients list on the package. Many blends have a "shelf life" printed on them, usually in months or years.

The second way is to look at your tobacco's condition. If it looks and smells fine after you open it, then it should be good for at least several months (if not years) if stored properly.

If you're unsure about how long your particular blend will last, here are some tips:

Store it in an airtight container. This includes plastic bags and tins. Don't leave anything unsealed unless you intend to smoke it within a few days or weeks of opening it up.

Keep your pipe tobacco away from heat sources, including sunlight and microwaves (which can make most tobaccos go stale). If it's in a tin, keep the lid tightly closed so moisture doesn't build up inside and cause mold growth.More
