Why do you need many tobacco pipes should you own?
The answer to this question depends a lot on what kind of smoker you are. If you're just starting out and want to learn the ropes, I'd say that three pipes would be enough. Two of them should be dedicated to one kind of tobacco, while the third can be used for everything else.
If you're an experienced pipe smoker with an extensive collection, the answer is a bit trickier. It depends on how many different tobaccos you enjoy smoking and how often you smoke them. My personal recommendation is that everyone should have at least three pipes dedicated to their favorite blends: one for smoking indoors, one for smoking outdoors (or maybe in front of friends) and one for travel or when moving from place to place (e.g., when going away for vacation).
If you like trying new blends all the time, then I suggest having at least two pipes for each kind of tobacco: one for regular use and another one that's reserved exclusively for those blends you don't know well yet (so you can give it some time to dry out properly before smoking too much).

By swapping out different pipes from your collection for different kinds of tobacco blends, you'll be able to better appreciate how each blend interacts with its environment — including its smoking apparatus!
